I keep having the most intense déjà vu.

I heard somewhere once that frequent sensations of déjà vu were a sign that your brain just wasn’t occupied enough — that you had too much free time. That would certainly make sense in my case. My brain could probably use the exercise.

It’s been so eerily real, though, each time I’ve been struck with the feeling these past twelve months, and it seems to be happening more and more often. For as long as the moment lasts, I absolutely know that I’ve lived it before, that I’ve dreamed it before. But then as the intensity of those fifteen, twenty, thirty seconds fade, my certainty goes with it. Probably a good thing.

I just looked it up and meandered across this David Copperfield quote:

“We have all some experience of a feeling, that comes over us occasionally, of
what we are saying and doing having been said and done before, in a remote
time – of our having been surrounded, dim ages ago, by the same faces, objects,
and circumstances – of our knowing perfectly what will be said next,
as if we suddenly remember it!”

And this:

“Some believe déjà vu is the memory of dreams. Though the majority
of dreams are never remembered, a dreaming person can display
activity in the areas of the brain that process long-term memory.
It has been speculated that dreams read directly into long-term memory,
bypassing short-term memory entirely. In this case, déjà vu might be a memory
of a forgotten dream with elements in common with the current
waking experience. This may be similar to another phenomenon
known as déjà rêvé, or ‘already dreamed.’”

… Saweeeeeeet. Maybe some of my more benign thriller/adventure dreams will manifest themselves as real world déjà rêvé episodes.

It’s 10:45 on a Saturday morning, and I still haven’t been to bed. I wonder if inadvertent, self-imposed sleep deprivation can cause déjà vu. It definitely causes incoherent rambling.
